COOKEN Special Events Page

Carl G. Howard 8AGF Special Event - was held from July 17 - 21, 2007 to commemorate the first licensed amateur in the Newark-Licking county area.

Carl Howard first appears in the Department of Commerce radio listings for 1915.

Howard could have taken his exams anytime in the previous year of 1914, but he officially appears in the 1915 DOC book. At the time of his listing he was 17 years old and an apprentice electrician with a Newark construction company.

In 1916, Howard 8AGF appears in the March 1916 QST as an official relay station on the "D" route between Hartford, Connecticut and Key West, Florida.

The club call of W8TNX was used thru out the week of July 16-20, 2007 on various bands and modes.

On Saturday July 21st W8TNX operated from The Works which is located on South First Street in Newark. The hours of operation were from around 9-10am until the bands fold late in the day or 4-5pm which ever came first.

The Works displayed various local amateur's radios and other items from Tuesday, July 10th until July 24th.

Johnny Clem Special Event Station - The Second Johnny Clem Special Event station was in operation on August 11th from the Licking County Historical park on North Sixth street in downtown Newark. Pictures taken during the event have been posted at http://www.cooken.org/photos/thumbnails.php?album=5
